I was in a cab earlier this morning when something worth blogging came out of the driver's mouth! He was listening to a hard core music so loud and annoying when I get in. And with composure and respect, I asked him to turn his stereo to AM mode. Not quite a favor in tone. And without a smile, he obliged!

"...labindalawa na ang patay sa sunog dito sa Navotas kaninang madaling. Hindi pa rin matukoy ng mga awtoridad ang sanhi ng apoy na tumupok sa daan-daang kabahayan ng mga illegal settlers...."

The driver was furious upon hearing the words 'illegal settlers'. So I asked why. And his answers was even more startling than  his reaction!

The term 'illegal settler' is politically correct but conscientously incorrect he said! Kahit anong arte ng terms ang gagamitin natin sa kanila, 'squatter' pa din sila! Homeless. Living in poverty. His words are quite judgemental. But I can't blame him. He was kind enough to provide an alternative though. If the government will provide more jobs, there will be no more squatters!

Bow ako kay manong driver! He made sense!
Whether we use the words 'illegal settler' or 'squatter', bottomline is, HINDI PA RIN MAGANDA PAKINGGAN YUN!

Take a look at the term 'kasambahay'.

Kasambahay in Filipino, is a term that refers to person na kasama mo sa bahay. They could either be your housemates, roommates, cousins, or family members, na kasama mo sa iisang bahay. It refers to someone na itinuturing mong kasama sa pamilya. Pero yung iba, pinagmamalupitan pa din sila. Sinisigawan pag inutusan or worst, pinagbubuhatan ng kamay.

How do we use these words in a sentence?

Kung meron kang kasama sa work na ugaling squatter pero mukha naman syang may muchacha, refer him/her as ILLEGAL SETTLER. You can only use the term 'squatter' pag nagresign na katulong nya or wala na syang trabaho!

Maaari mong gamitin ang salitang 'kasambahay' pag civilized ang kaharap mo. Pero kung kaharap mo ang officemate mong 'illegal settler' gamitin mo ang term na muchacha! Relate sha dyan!

Overheard this on the floor:

'Sorry for the moment of silence!'
